Number of incorporated medical institutions Japan 2013-2022, by type
As of March 2022, the number of incorporated medical institutions in Japan amounted to approximately 57.1 thousand in total, of which around 56.8 thousand were associations and 367 were foundations. The medical corporations system in Japan began in 1950 and is recognized under the Medical Law enacted in 1948. With an approval of a prefectural governor, medical institutions, such as hospitals or medical, dental, and nursing care clinics, can incorporate themselves and operate as non-profit organizations. Two types of medical corporations are approved in Japan: associations and foundations.
