A research from April 2020 estimated that the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic will have a significant impact on revenues of the tourism industry in Italy. Revenues are expected to decrease by over 40 billion euros in the first semester of 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year. According to the study, tourism in Italy already lost 15.6 billion euros from January to March, while a loss of 25 billion euros is expected between April and June. In this sense, tourism revenues would decrease by 73 percent compared to the first semester of 2019.
