The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season was expected to be slightly more active than normal, with between 17 and 18 named storms forecast, in comparison to an average of 14 recorded between 1991 and 2020. Out of those, seven or eight are expected to become hurricanes, with around half reaching major hurricane status (category 3 or higher). Warmer waters in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico in the summer contribute to the development of hurricanes and the active hurricane season, which officially spans from June 1 to November 30.
