According to a survey conducted by Ipsos, around 45 percent of the Malaysian respondents stated that they strongly supported a fishing ban of all endangered species in order to curb overfishing. In contrast, only three percent stated they strongly opposed this. Malaysia is the biggest seafood consumer in Southeast Asia and the fisheries sector plays an important role to the national economy. However, Malaysia's marine natural resources are currently declining due to overfishing and illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
