As of February 2020, nine percent of Malaysian respondents believed that the national government had overreacted to the COVID-19 outbreak. The Central Bank of Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia, stated that the coronavirus outbreak will affect Malaysia’s economic growth in Q1 2020. Travel and tourism and associated sectors are predicted to be among the most affected industries in Malaysia as Malaysia's biggest tourist numbers are coming from China.

The survey was conducted across Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia, with 4,111 respondents in total.
