The source wanted to assess the breakdown of the modes of discharge of patients released from emergency rooms in France in 2013. In that year, approximately three-quarters of the patients returned home after their visit to the emergency department.

Data were retrieved from a national survey of Hospital Emergency Department Structures. This survey is conducted on an irregular basis by the Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) and the Ministry of Health. The last survey was carried out between 8 a.m. on 11 June 2013 and 8 a.m. the following day among all patients who had presented themselves to the emergency services in all the structures authorized for this activity in metropolitan France and in the overseas departments.
