In 2018, fish and seafood was the most popular alternative to red meat during Lent and Easter in Mexico City. According to a survey, over half of respondents who looked for substitutes of red meat during this season claimed to consume fish or seafood instead. Vegetables and chicken were the second and third most common alternatives to red meat, with a preference of 21.5 and 20.1 percent of respondents respectively. Any other kind of products were only considered as a red meat substitute by 2.4 percent or less of the consumers surveyed.
