As of January 17, 2023, over 13.5 million people have been tested positive for COVID-19 in the Benelux region. The Netherlands had approximately 8.6 million cases, compared to 4.7 million in Belgium.
COVID-19 progression in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands
Although COVID-19 was officially in Belgium before the Netherlands, confirmed infections escalated earlier in the Netherlands. Belgium had reported a higher number of infections until around December 2020, although since then the number of cases in the Netherlands has significantly increased.
A high rate of deaths in the region
As of January 13, 2023, Belgium had a COVID-19 rate of mortality of around 291 deaths per 100,000 population. Furthermore Belgium has registered roughly two-thirds of the Benelux death toll.
