Weather and climate disasters have become increasingly costly in the United States with billion-dollar events costing an average of 80 billion U.S. dollars per year between 2010 and 2019. On average, between 1980 and 2019, these major disasters cost around 44 billion U.S. dollars per year. In the three year period between 2017 and 2019, the annual rate was over three times that amount at roughly 150 billion U.S. dollars. The most costly weather and climate events in the United States are generally tropical cyclones, which typically hit the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
