In December 2019, 34 percent of Russians believed that the entry of USSR troops in Afghanistan was a political gamble into which the country was dragged by its leaders. Another third of survey respondents were of the opinion that it was necessary to send the Soviet troops to Afghanistan to defend geopolitical interests of the USSR.
