The majority of premises that had their alcohol and late night refreshment licenses reviewed in 2018 were in relation to crime and disorder. In England and Wales, premises need a license to sell or serve alcohol, provide regulated entertainment or late night refreshments. There were 611 reviews completed in 2018, of which 505 related to crime and disorder, including the sale of illicit alcohol.

Alcohol and late night refreshment licenses allow premises to legally serve alcohol, refreshments and/or provide regulated entertainment in England and Wales. These include premises licenses, club premises certificates, personal licenses and temporary event notices. Local Authorities can be asked to review a license should it be causing an adverse impact on licensing objectives (i.e. prevention of crime and disorder, public safety, prevention of public nuisance, and the protection of children from harm). This can result in a premises having its license revoked or withdrawn.
