The majority of pedelec owners in Japan reported that a major benefit of their pedal-assist electric bicycles was that going shopping has become easier, according to a survey conducted in December 2019.
While bicycles with built-on self-propulsion systems are treated like mopeds in Japan, models using an electric power assisted system to support the pedaling motion are considered to be bikes in compliance with traffic laws.

Out of an initial sample of 5,752 bicycle owners, 1,000 respondents, who use pedal-assist e-bikes, were chosen to answer the following question.
Survey subjects were bicycle owners across Japan.
Original question: "On which occasions do you think your pedal-assist e-bike comes in handy?".
