The majority of pedelec owners in Japan purchased their pedal-assist electric bicycles because they live in a residential area with a high number of slopes, according to a survey conducted in December 2019.
While bicycles with built-on self-propulsion systems are treated like mopeds in Japan, models using an electric power assisted system to support the pedaling motion are considered to be bikes in compliance with traffic laws.

Out of an initial sample of 5,752 bicycle owners, 1,000 respondents, who use pedal-assist e-bikes, were chosen to answer the following question.
Survey subjects were bicycle owners across Japan.
Original question: "What was your reason for purchasing a pedal-assist e-bike?"
