According to a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight, approximately 50 percent of respondents aged 55 years and older stated that they have not tried functional beverages because they did not understand their function or what they claimed to do. In the same survey, the majority of respondents that have tried functional beverages stated that they tried fermented and probiotic drinks which promote gut health.

The survey was conducted among 59 female and 85 male respondents. Other surveyed countries included China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam.
