According to a survey conducted by Rakuten Insight in November 2019, around 41 percent of 45 to 54 year old respondents in Hong Kong said that they consumed a functional beverage because of the health benefits touted. Meanwhile, around 35 percent of respondents aged between 16 and 24 confirmed this reason.

Functional beverages described in other questions of the survey included energy-boosting drinks, fermented/probiotic drinks, low-calorie drinks, drinks promoting beauty/brain performance/health, functional water, "detox" drinks, etc.
Among a total of 3,605 survey respondents in Hong Kong, 2,855 said they had tried functional beverages. Among them, 1,812 were female and 1,043 were male.
