Residents in Aichi were, with around 694 Japanese yen on average, the most generous in monetary offerings donated on the first shrine visit of the new year (hatsumôde), according to a survey conducted in November 2019 among locals of the 47 prefectures in Japan.
Hatsumôde refers to the Japanese custom of visiting a Shinto shrine at the beginning of the new year, which is usually accompanied by a small monetary offering to the shrine deity.
