In 2018, the level of knowledge regarding HIV and AIDS seemed to be correlated to the educational background of Belgians. Indeed, the lower the educational level, the lower the share of people with valid knowledge on HIV and AIDS. For instance, 20 percent of people with primary education had valid knowledge of HIV and AIDS, whereas 60 percent of people with higher education had valid knowledge. Furthermore, only Belgians who received higher education surpassed the national share of people with valid knowledge: 48,2 percent.

Valid knowledge is calculated by the source as people who identify condoms and fidelity as protective methods against HIV and knows that, firstly, a healthy-looking person can have AIDS, secondly, that HIV can not be transmitted by embracing or shaking the hand of a person with aids, and finally, also that HIV is not transmitted by drinking from the glass of a person with AIDS.
