The majority of external debt taken on by private companies in low and middle income countries was issued as loans, which totaled just over 2.14 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020. This compares to 671.07 billion U.S. dollars in bonds for the same year.

Nonguaranteed private sector debt is debt that has been taken out by private companies but which is not guaranteed for repayment by a public entity.
Low income countries are defined by the source as countries with a 2015 GNI per capita of 1,025 U.S. dollars or less.
Middle income countries are defined by the source as countries with a 2015 GNI per capita of between 1,026 and 12,475 U.S. dollars.
The source only included debt with a maturity of more than one year.
