The external debt taken on by private companies in low income countries has grown from around 14.36 trillion U.S. dollars in 2011 to 79.31 trillion U.S. dollars in 2021. Similarly, the external debt taken on by private companies in middle income countries has also increased to around 2,891.31 trillion U.S. dollars in 2021.

Nonguaranteed private sector debt is debt that has been taken out by private companies but which is not guaranteed for repayment by a public entity.
Low income countries are defined by the source as countries with a 2015 GNI per capita of 1,025 U.S. dollars or less.
Middle income countries are defined by the source as countries with a 2015 GNI per capita of between 1,026 and 12,475 U.S. dollars.
The source only included long-term debt with a maturity of more than one year.
