A true jewel of the French wine culture, Champagne is one of the most famous French wine areas in the world. A luxury product, as evidenced by the takeover of one of its largest estates by LVMH group, the value of champagne winegrowing operations has constantly increased since 1991, rising from 181,400 euros per hectare to 1,040,600 euros in 2021.
Champagne and its golden bubbles
In correlation with the market, the average selling price of champagne bottles has increased in recent years among retailers in France.
Within the most important champagne producers, Moët-Hennessy stands out and is at the top of the podium. In 2017, the group reached a value of more than 2,000 billion euros.
But Champagne winegrowers are not the only ones to benefit from the world’s enthusiasm for sparkling wines. In 2020, the Italian Prosecco winegrowers produced the largest volume of sparkling wine, with 412.8 million units sold. Appearing in the second position, Champagne producers reached 328.88 million bottles sold that same year.
Wine, a whole sector of the French economy in full bloom
Winegrowing is by far the main source of salaried agricultural employment in France. The industry and its numerous companies employ many workers.
