In 2022, 376 people died in the attempt to cross the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. In 2021, 111 migrants died by crossing this route. Among the three main routes to cross the Mediterranean, the Eastern Mediterranean Sea registered the lowest number of fatalities.
2015 was the year in which the number of deaths on the Eastern Mediterranean Route peaked. In this year, 804 migrants died in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The Eastern Mediterranean route includes migration flows from Turkey to Greece and Cyprus. According to the source, more information is available about the Eastern route compared to the Western and Central ones. In the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, bodies are more often brought to land than in the Western and Central Sea.

The Missing Migrants Project counts migrants who have died in the attempt to migrate to a country different from their country of residence. The count does not include the deaths of people occurred in immigration detention centers as well as deaths occurred after the deportation to the homeland. In addition, the project does not count the deaths of migrants occurred as a result of labor exploitation.
