In 2019, there were around six overseas resident civil unions of opposite-sex couples registered in New Zealand, a slight increase from the number recorded in 2005. The first civil unions in the country were celebrated in 2005, and the first same-sex marriages were celebrated in 2013.

Before 1999, marriage data were extracted on the basis of 'date of marriage'. From 1999 onwards, marriage and civil union data are extracted using 'date of registration'.
