Since being granted the ability to participate in presidential elections in 1961, the District of Colombia has voted for the Democratic candidate in every one of the last 15 elections. On the other side of the political spectrum, South Dakota has voted for the Republican candidate in 27 of the 29 presidential elections since 1900.

* Alaska and Hawaii participated in presidential elections from 1960 onwards, and the District of Colombia from 1964 onwards.
** Oklahoma participated in presidential elections from 1908 onwards, and Arizona and New Mexico from 1912 onwards.
*** Other parties include: the States' Rights Democratic Party, the American Independent Party and the Progressive Party.
In cases where the electoral vote was split (such as in Maine and Nebraska) the party with the most electoral votes has been counted here.
