California residents owned 18.3 percent of pets in the United States that year, and the state recorded 20.1 percent of all gross written pet insurance premiums. This was followed by New York, with 7.5 percent of pets owned by residents of this state in 2023, and with 8.7 percent of all gross written pet insurance premiums.
