Since the Great Recession, the interest coverage ratio of the 1,000 largest U.S. companies has been falling, with the 25 largest nonfinancial companies reducing their ratio by 4.5 percent points between 2010 and 2017. This compares to an increase of 4.5 percentage points in the period between 2002 and 2007.
The interest coverage ratio is calculated by dividing a company's earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) by their interest payments due.
