Natural gas imports reached Italy mainly through two pipelines: the Trans Austria Gas (TAG) pipeline and the Trans-Mediterranean (TransMed) gas pipeline. In 2023, they had a capacity of 44 and 34 billion standard cubic meters, respectively. These pipelines brought gas from Russia and Algeria, which were the main suppliers of natural gas to Italy.
In total, Italy had five connections to pipelines and five regasification centers. The main one was the Adriatic LNG terminal offshore Caverzere.
Import capacity of natural gas pipelines and liquefied natural gas terminals bringing gas to Italy in 2023
(in billion standard cubic meters per year)
Characteristic
Import capacity in billion standard cubic meters per year
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) figures have been converted from million tons per annum to billion cubic meters per year using the formula 1 million ton per year of LNG= 1.379 billion cubic meters per year of gas.
Million standard cubic feet per day have been converted to billion standard cubic meters using the formula 1 cubic meter = 35.3 cubic feet.
