Households' saving ratio in the UK 2000-2022

Households' saving ratio measures the propensity of households (as a percentage) to save out of their current income. As of the second quarter of 2020, the household savings ratio in the United Kingdom (UK) peaked at 23.9 percent. The highest value recorded throughout the period.

Saving for retirement

According to an annual survey, the share of adults in the UK that had adequate savings for retirement increased in 2020. As adequate savers, the survey considers adults aged over 30 which were either saving a minimum of 12 percent of their income or were expecting a defined benefit scheme to cover their main retirement income. Although there had been an overall increase in the share of adults prepared financially for retirement, approximately 40 percent in 2020 were still not adequately ready. Nevertheless, the median disposable income of retired individuals in the UK decreased in 2020/21.
