The majority of Russian online banking users made purchases using this digital payment method while paying for mobile services, as per over 66 percent of respondents in 2019. The second most common purpose of digital banking across the country was to pay for utilities and housing services. Every third survey participant admitted to use this financial tool to purchase tickets for leisure activities, such as cinema and concerts.
The penetration rate of online banking was the highest among Russian users aged 25 and 34 years, with nearly 94 percent of e-commerce customers in this age group employing online banking services in 2019. Russia's most popular online payment service Sberbank Online had nearly 65 million users as of 2018.
