In Wallonia, over 117,000 people over aged 65 years are living with a disability in 2018. Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue diseases were the two most common main diagnosis.
However, disabilities can be linked to various main diagnosis. Thus, mental and behavioral disorders were also quite wide-spread in this age range. Furthermore, diseases of the central nervous system were equally common.
Disabilities are characterized by their impairment on someone's autonomy. The main diagnosis refers to the condition impacting someone's autonomy the most. In Belgium, since 2013, doctors can encode the main diagnosis. This can be useful to understand the origin, consequences, and possible evolution of the disability.
