According to a survey on food and beverages companies in Malaysia conducted in January 2019, 59 percent of respondents stated that they had replaced their ingredients with lower or zero calorie substitutes as part of their nutrition reformulation efforts. This comes in light of the sugar tax implemented in Malaysia in 2019. This was the most prominent measure taken by the government to combat the high obesity rates in Malaysia, which is one of the highest in Asia.
