In 2018, the debt that El Salvador's central government owed to foreign creditors was more than double the amount of debt held with creditors based in the country. In the period between 2010 and 2018, El Salvador's both external and internal debts in relation to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) have remained quite steady at an average of around 34 percent for foreign debt and 15 percent for internal debt.
