In fiscal year 2017, around 41 thousand tons of mail were carried on trunk lines in Japan via domestic flights, accounting for the majority of the domestic airmail transportation. Airmail is commonly transported domestically as air freight on passenger flights operated by the major Japanese airlines Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways.

"Trunk lines" in air transportation refers to the main routes connecting the trunk airports with one another, which includes the New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, the Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport in Tokyo, the Itami Airport and Kansai International Airport in Osaka, the Fukuoka Airport in Fukuoka, and the Naha Airport in Okinawa.
