AT&T Inc. reported revenues of roughly 122 billion U.S. dollars worldwide in 2023, with the vast majority of this generated in the United States, the company’s home market. The sharp fall in revenues in 2022 reflects the completion of a deal to spin off the company's interests in WarnerMedia.
AT&T leaves the entertainment industry
The media and entertainment company WarnerMedia was created in 2018 via AT&T's merger with Time Warner. The closure of the merger deal, which followed lengthy legal proceedings, represented a landmark move into the entertainment business for AT&T. In 2020, AT&T oversaw the launch of WarnerMedia's streaming service HBO Max, which brought the telecoms giant into direct competition with Amazon and Netflix.
T-Mobile challenges AT&T in 5G quality
The decline in AT&T's revenues in 2022 saw the operator lose its position as the largest U.S. telecoms firm by revenue, with rival Verizon clinching the top spot. Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile US, remain in tight competition in the U.S. wireless sector. While AT&T has retained the most wireless subscribers, T-Mobile has registered superior 5G download speeds and coverage.
