Barcelona was the most sulfur polluted cruise port in Europe in 2022, with cruise ships emitting 18,277 kilograms of sulfur dioxide (SOx). Civitavecchia, also known as Port of Rome, followed closely, with cruise ship SOx emissions estimated at 16,307 kilograms. The cruise ship industry has faced a recent backlash from local residents, notably in Venice. Venice had previously been one of the most polluted port cities in Europe, but a ban on large cruise ships entering the port in 2021 has resulted in massive reductions in air pollution.
