According to a survey on substance use in India, there were over 7.7 million users of inhalants across India in 2017 and 2018. Out of this, over two million people were classified as problem users of such substances. It was estimated that around 4.6 children were problematic users of inhalants and needed help for their addiction.

*Additionally, a Respondent Driven Sampling survey was conducted covering 135 districts and 72,642 people who were dependent on illicit drugs.
According to source, problem users are those who score between 4 and 26 (for alcohol between 11 and 26) on the WHO ASSIST test and have experienced any harmful consequence of substance use within three months preceding the survey period. Dependent users are those who score over 26 points on the WHO ASSIST tests.
