According to a survey conducted in South Korea in 2020, the most preferred characters were Kakao Friends, with 39.8 percent of percent of respondents ranking them in their top three. These characters originate from KakaoTalk, the most popular messenger in South Korea. First introduced as emoticons in KakaoTalk, several shops selling Kakao Friends merchandise have been opened up over the last years.
