In 2023, around 230,000 tree seedlings were planted in Hong Kong's country parks, one of the lowest points in the past decade. The city lost almost all its forests in the second world war. To quickly re-establish forest land cover, the government planted many fast-growing exotic non-native tree species. In 2009, it reduced the tree planting number and shifted its focus to native trees to enhance biodiversity. In 2015, 80 percent of all 400 thousand tree seedlings were native species.
