As of January 2024, companies in the semiconductor equipment industry in Western Europe saw average returns on equity of approximately 61 percent, as compared to steel firms which saw a ROE of three percent.
Return on equity is an important measure of a company's profitability. ROE is calculated by taking the amount of net income returned as a percentage of the shareholders equity. Return on equity looks at how well a company’s management is using its assets to create profits.

The source used cumulated values for both variables, for the sector, to estimate the sector ROE. If book value of equity is negative, this is not estimated. (For non-cash ROE, see Non-cash ROE)". Figures for years 2019 to 2023 were previously published by the source.
