Independence Day in Mexico is an important national holiday officially celebrated on September 16. In 2018, 74.3 percent of participants in a telephone interview declared taking part of the festivities, up from 2016 when only 67.7 percent declared celebrating the holiday.
This day's festivities start the previous evening, when the president of Mexico re-enacts the "Grito de Independencia", an historical event that is considered the beginning of the independence movement. Celebrations include music, fireworks and lots of traditional food.
