In 2020, the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) became the leading airport operator in Mexico, by outperforming Mexico City International Airport's operator (AICM) in air passenger traffic. In 2019, the AICM was at the top of the list, with more than 50 million passengers handled. This figure, however, went down by more than 50 percent in the following year. GAP's passenger traffic also dropped significantly in the year of the COVID-19 pandemic, though it served roughly 3.5 million passengers more than its closest competitor.
