As of 2019, the Indian army had the largest strength of personnel with over one million people working in various capacities. Notably, this figure excluded over thousand personnel working as non-regular junior commissioned officers and other class two workers. The Indian air force came second, but with a wide margin after the army, with over 129 thousand personnel. The naval forces had fewer personnel who were mainly recruited as sailors, crew and ground staff.
