According to a survey conducted by Ipsos in June 2019, about 80 percent of Indian respondents trusted the national government to decide on an appropriate time and moment to cut off social media platforms in times of crisis. Of these, 42 percent strongly agreed with this statement.
The survey was conducted in light of coordinated attacks on more than 300 Sri Lankans in April earlier that year. This had led to the shutting down of social media by the national government in an attempt to stop the spread of misinformation.
