In the French legislative elections of June 2024, Eric Ciotti, president of Les Républicains (center-right), decided to form a coalition with the National Rally without previous consultation with his party's leaders. Therefore, some party members chose to follow Ciotti in the alliance with the far-right, and others declared their opposition to the coalition. As a result, Les Républicains had its lowest share of votes in over 50 years. On the other hand, to survive, the Socialist Party was incorporated into the new leftist coalition New Popular Front. The coalition of La France Insoumise, the Ecologists, the Communists, and the Socialists was able to win almost 28 percent of the votes.
