In the months leading up to the European elections that took place from 23-26 May 2019, parties of the European People's Party (EPP) in Hungary spent half of their Facebook advertising budget on ads relating to the topic of immigration, whereas in Germany and Italy, immigration was not a priority. In Sweden, almost a quarter (23 percent) was spent on Facebook ads on the topic of climate change. In Austria, 11 percent of the budget was used on Facebook ads that made reference to the economic situation.

The source adds the following information: "The texts of the advertisements were checked for specific keywords relating to European policy issues identified by Addendum. Images and videos could not be analysed automatically, so their contents were not taken into account; any descriptive text accompanying them was analysed, however.
If an advertising text contained any of the specified keywords, it was listed as being about the corresponding topic or topics. This means that the cost of an advert might have been assigned more than once, to different issues. For this reason, the percentages shown in the advertising spends may not add up to 100."
