In 2017, the average North American had the largest ecological footprint, at over eight hectares per capita. By comparison, the average person living in Africa had an ecological footprint of just 1.36 hectares. Only in two world regions does the estimated biocapacity exceed the ecological footprint. These are Oceania and Latin America and the Caribbean. Africa toes the line exactly at the limit. The world has been in a net global deficit since 1970.
