According to the Indian government, there were 257 terrorists killed in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018. On the other hand, 34 extremists were killed in the north-eastern region of the country that same year. Overall, the number of insurgencies were seen to have increased in Jammu and Kashmir, while the north-eastern belt has seen a decrease in insurgency and militant activity.
Jammu and Kashmir has been at the center of a prolonged dispute between India and Pakistan since 1947, owing to border issues and religion-based ideological differences. At the same time, the north-eastern region witnessed separatist and militant movements.
