As of June 30, 2022, the Southeast was the Brazilian region with the highest number of newly notified HIV-positive cases, with approximately 5.43 thousand new diagnoses. The Northeast region followed, with around 4.56 thousand new cases of HIV. In 2020, the estimated number of people with HIV in the South American country amounted to about 930 thousand.
