Annual number of credit card transactions in the Netherlands 2012-2022, per capita
Dutch consumers did not use credit cards often in 2022, although figures did increase somewhat when compared to the year before. This is according to data from the domestic central bank, which did not provide detailed figures on the card-based payment method. Just 0.03 billion of all seven billion payment transactions in hotels, restaurants, shops, bars, market stalls, petrol stations and service providers were done with a credit card. Debit cards transactions happened much more frequently. This is partly due to the relatively high use of contactless payment options in the Netherlands compared to other European countries.
