In Latin America and the Caribbean, approximately 86 percent of infants six to eight months old were introduced to solid, semi-solid or soft foods, according to estimates as of 2019. This is a child nutrition practice complementary to breastfeeding recommended by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. In addition, it was estimated that 62 percent of children aged 6 to 23 months in the region were supplied with the recommended minimum diet diversity, while 75 percent were fed at least as frequently as suggested.
Meanwhile, less than half of Latin American and Caribbean children in that age range were provided with the minimum acceptable diet. Around that same percentage of infants in the region continued breastfeeding until 12 to 23 months of age.
