In 2019, the number of active bank POS terminals in Italy was approximately 3.5 million. Over the period considered in the graph, the number of such terminal increased more than twofold. In fact, in 2012, there were less than 1.5 million POS terminals. Such a sharp increase in just a few years was probably due to the increasing popularity of cashless payments and the ease of using debit or credit cards when paying for goods or services rather than using cash.
